Household

Create or join a household

A household links you with your partner or family so you can pool the receipts that matter — while everything else stays private. When you join, you decide how much of your past to bring with you.

Create a household

  1. Go to Settings → Household.
  2. Give the household a name and start creating.
  3. On the Before you continue screen, choose how to share your past receipts (see below), then continue.
  4. Invite the others: tap Generate invite code and send them the code. It expires in 24 hours.

Join a household

  1. Ask a member to send you an invite code — they tap Generate invite code in Settings → Household.
  2. In Settings → Household, enter the invite code shared by that member.
  3. On the Before you continue screen, choose how to share your past receipts, then continue.

If the code is wrong or has expired, you'll see Invalid or expired invite code. — just ask for a fresh one.

The choice that matters: your past receipts

Whether you're creating or joining, HouseTally asks you to choose how much of your receipt history to share with the household. This is a required, one-time choice — there is no silent "share everything." Pick one:

None

Keep all past receipts private. Only new receipts are shared. A good default if you just want to start fresh together.

From a date

Share receipts dated on or after a date you pick. Everything older stays private — handy for "share from when we moved in together."

All

Share your entire receipt history with the household.

Your choice takes effect the moment you create or join — you're never retroactively opted in without deciding.

What sharing changes

The Before you continue screen sums it up in three lines:

  • Your future receipts become visible to household members.
  • Members can see totals, items and tags on shared receipts.
  • You can leave the household at any time from Settings.
Still your call, receipt by receipt

The past-receipts choice only sets your starting point. Afterwards you control each receipt individually with the Shared toggle — see Private by default.
