Privacy

Private by default & the Shared toggle

Most shared-expense apps show your partner everything. HouseTally doesn't. Every receipt you scan or add stays private to you — until you deliberately share it, one at a time.

Everything starts private

When you scan or add a receipt, it's private by default. You're the only person who can see it — the total, the individual items, the tags, and the photo. Nobody in your household sees it unless you choose to share it.

Two ways a receipt becomes shared

HouseTally only ever shares a receipt when you take one of these actions:

  • You add it in household mode. If your active view is set to your household when you scan or enter a receipt, it's shared from the start.
  • You turn on the Shared toggle on a receipt that's currently private.

Anything else stays private. There is no setting that silently shares everything.

Share a single receipt

  1. Open the receipt from your receipts list.
  2. Tap the Shared chip. It switches on, and the receipt now appears in your household's shared view.

This only has somewhere to go once you're in a household. If you haven't joined one yet, receipts simply stay private — see Create or join a household.

Unshare a receipt

  1. Open the shared receipt.
  2. Tap Shared, tap to unmark. It turns back to private and disappears from the household view.

What household members can see

On a receipt you've shared, members of your household can see the total, the items, and the tags. On everything you keep private, they see nothing at all — not the total, not the photo, not that it exists.

Your view vs the household's

You can switch between your personal totals and your household totals anywhere they're shown. Personal view covers everything you own; household view shows only the receipts that you and other members have chosen to share.

The rule

A receipt is shared only by an explicit action you take — adding it in household mode, or turning on Shared. Turn the toggle off and it's private again. That's the whole model.
